The Browns kicked off the new league year by continuing to address the needs on their offensive line.
Cleveland has acquired T Tytus Howard in a trade with the Texans in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick from the Raiders.
"I'm excited for a fresh start," Howard said. "Being in a city with such a love for football, and just excited to get here and make an impact – especially on the offensive line, to give Shedeur (Sanders), Deshaun (Watson), all these quarterbacks as much time as possible, to make an impact every day and win some games."
Howard is entering his eighth NFL season, joining just his second team since he was drafted. He was originally drafted by the Texans in the first round as the 23rd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent his first seven years in the league with Houston, starting all 93 games played.
Last season he started 16 games with starts at right tackle (nine), left guard (five) and right guard (two). With the Texans, he helped protect two quarterbacks that earned Pro Bowl honors in Deshaun Watson (2019-20) and C.J. Stroud (2023). In 2024, he helped open holes for RB Joe Mixon, who was selected to the Pro Bowl. In 2019, Howard was selected to the PFWA All-Rookie team.
Howard adds a key veteran piece to the offensive line as the Browns work to rebuild the position group. With the beginning of the 2026 free agency period, Cleveland had six offensive linemen hit the market. Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry said the offense – and in particular the offensive line – would see turnover during the offseason.
Now, Howard starts the new additions to the offensive line as they look to revamp the offense. During the 2025 season, Howard took snaps at right tackle, right guard and left guard and can bring position versatility if needed.
The Browns acquired T Tytus Howard in a trade with the Texans. Howard was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and spent the first seven years of his NFL career with Houston, starting all 93 career games.

Howard is also reunited with his former offensive line coach George Warhop now in Cleveland, as Warhop was the offensive line coach for the Texans in 2022.
"He's a great coach," Howard said. "He's my favorite coach since I've been in the league. He's going to bring the most out of his players. He's high energy guy. He's going to demand a lot, and he's going to coach everyone the same way. And he'll demand the best out of you; he'll get the best out all his players."
Howard's impact will reach past just the 2026 season, as he also signed a three-year deal in conjunction with the trade – cementing him as a core piece of the Browns' offensive line for the next few years.
"It means a lot to be able to sign an extension here, a start fresh and be able to build my name up here in Cleveland," Howard said. "I'm excited for the future. I know that it's great things to come, and hopefully I can be here even longer than the extension to continue to make a positive impact on the city."
