Browns aiming to continue trend of takeaways against Vikings | Team Coverage

The Browns have intercepted a pass in back-to-back weeks

Defensive Takeaways Browns Vikings 10.1 Team Coverage

As Lions QB Jared Goff's pass floated into the hands of CB Denzel Ward, the Browns defense notched takeaways in back-to-back games.

In combination with S Grant Delpit's interception in Week 3 against the Packers, Ward's interception was the second takeaway of Cleveland's season.

Against the Vikings in London in Week 5, the Browns can extend the streak to three games and continue the defensive momentum in the takeaway column. Through four weeks in the 2025 season, Minnesota has been prone to interceptions, throwing five between quarterbacks J.J. McCarthy and Carson Wentz.

"The focus is on us, and we're just trying to go in and do our job and execute," Ward said. "The goal every week is to try to get takeaways and see where we can exploit that against the offense. So, we just have to go and do our job, and takeaways are going to come, and I think they're going to keep rolling in."

For Minnesota, with McCarthy's game status still in question, Wentz is in line to start. Playing in Week 4 against the Steelers, Pittsburgh was able to force Wentz to make mistakes, including throwing two interceptions – one of which the Steelers scored a touchdown as a result of. On the Vikings last possession, he threw another interception that ultimately was called back but would have helped end the game for Pittsburgh.

Ward said watching Wentz's tape will be key to helping the defense be ready for Minnesota's offense on Oct. 5.

"He's an experienced quarterback, a guy that has played in this league," Ward said. "We've seen him a few times before, so pretty familiar with him and the type of player he is and just have to keep watching some more film on him and see what he likes to do and try to eliminate it."

LB Devin Bush said getting to Wentz and forcing him to make mistakes comes down to pressure. Against the Packers, the Browns used five sacks and consistent pocket pressure to force QB Jordan Love to make a quick decision. That fast release led to Delpit being able to jump a route and pick off the ball.

Against Detroit, while the Browns weren't able to sack Goff, they hit him five times and forced him to keep Cleveland's defense in his mind. That pressure and the potential of getting a takeaway on any play Bush thinks would also translate to helping the offense out.

"We can't control where the quarterback throws the ball or whether the running back fumbles or not, but we have to play every down like it's an opportunity to get the ball or to turn the ball over or even to set the offense up with good field position," Bush said. "I think going to games with that type of mindset would definitely give the offense a better confidence of putting some points up on the board."

That mindset is one that both Delpit and Ward have had this season, keeping it in the back of their heads that they can earn the offense extra possessions. According to Ward, since him and Delpit are now tied for the lead in interceptions, he's looking to overtake him and be at the top of the leaderboard by himself.

Even with the friendly competition between the two, recording more takeaways has been a goal for the Browns since the end of last season when they had just 12, including four interceptions. Whether it's Delpit, Ward or another Browns defensive player, they know what takeaways can do for a team's momentum in any given game.

"I feel good, but now I have to take one step ahead and go get another one and lead the team in takeaways so that's the goal," Ward said. "Try to keep rallying them up. I know Grant (Delpit's) going to keep competing trying to get some more takeaways. That's the goal that helps his team out, taking the ball away, and that's the focus every week."
