Browns elevate DB C.J. Smith to active roster

The Cleveland Browns signed DB C.J. Smith to the active roster from the practice squad. To make room on the roster, the team waived DB Darius Hillary.  [

Smith is 5-11, 188 pounds and is in his second NFL season out of North Dakota State. Originally signed by Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent in 2016, Smith appeared in 10 games last season. He spent Week 1 of the 2017 season on the Eagles' practice squad and the past 12 weeks on the Browns' practice squad. He is a native of Burnsville, Minn. Smith will wear No. 35.

Hillary has appeared in one game and been inactive for four. He spent the first eight weeks of the season on the practice squad.
