Assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone knows the work K Andre Szmyt puts into his kicking technique.

Going all the way back to the end of the 2024 season when Szmyt spent time with the Browns on their practice squad, through the 2025 offseason and into the first week of the regular season, he has witnessed how Szmyt approaches his process. He's strung solid practices together, made key kicks during the preseason and is in the right mental frame for kicking.

That's why, even after missing a key field goal and extra point in Week 1 against the Bengals, Ventrone's confidence has not wavered in Szmyt.

"It goes back to just the body of work that we've seen since he's been here," Ventrone said. "I think that when we're seeing the results in a practice setting and then in the preseason games, did he have not a great game in the opener? Yeah. But I think because of what we've seen to this point, we have confidence that we'll get back on track."

Head coach Kevin Stefanski echoed that sentiment and said Szmyt will be their kicker in Week 2 against the Ravens.

"Young player and will only get better," Stefanski said. "Obviously, he wants to come through in those moments, and we expect him to come through in those moments. But just like any player on our roster, he'll continue to get better."

During the 2025 preseason, Szmyt made all three of his field goal attempts – including a 37-yard game-winner against the Rams in the third week of the preseason – as well as one extra point attempt.

In Week 1, Szmyt made 1-of-2 field goal attempts and extra point attempts, making his first extra point in the second quarter but missing the second in the third quarter. He hit a 45-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter and missed a 36-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. The Browns ultimately lost 17-16 to the Bengals.

"I think we've had good operations. I don't think that's an issue," Ventrone said. "The practices have been good. The pregame warmup was good. I think that he's in a good head space. I feel like he's confident. He's got a lot of confidence. He understands that he needs to deliver and make his kicks."

As they reviewed the film of the kicks, Ventrone said he felt that Szmyt didn't finish the kick as well as he could have. Szmyt said following the game that he rushed his approach in the moment of both missed kicks.

But as they have prepared for Week 2 against the Ravens, Ventrone said Szmyt has had solid practices throughout the week. He believes that Szmyt is in that good headspace because of how he approaches his craft, and what he has seen from Szmyt's routine and body language on and off the field.

"When that stuff happens, you miss a kick that impacts a game like that…I mean, obviously we know how he feels and what's the best thing to do," Ventrone said. "I mean, you're going to support the guy that you believe in. So, I think that it's important that he understands that we support him, and he also understands that we expect him to make his kicks. So, I think that he's done everything in his power in the last four days to put it to bed, get back to work and get the results we want."
