CHARLOTTE – As the Browns walked out to the practice fields adjacent to Bank of America Stadium, their orange helmets and brown pants stood stark against the Panther blue surrounding the practice fields.

The Browns and Panthers held a joint practice on Aug. 6 ahead of their first preseason game on Aug. 8.

"Obviously thrilled to be here to get to go against the Panthers and Coach (Dave) Canales who I think does an awesome job," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "It'll be fun. It'll be a great challenge for both sides, our offense, our defense. We'll get two good 7-on-7 periods, we'll two good team periods, we'll get two good special teams, defense, offense so everyone's getting a workout here."

Here are the main observations from the joint practice between the Browns and the Panthers.

O-line vs. D-line Drills

During the 7-on-7 periods, the Browns' offensive linemen got their own work in as they matched up against the Panthers' defensive line for 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 drills. The period was energetic as the two sides worked on blocking against one another, and the Browns' offensive line kept different Panthers' defensive linemen at bay during the drill.

On another part of the field the Browns' defensive linemen went through 1-on-1 drills against the Panthers' offensive linemen during the first 7-on-7 period, and 2-on-2 drills in the second 7-on-7 period.

7-on-7 periods

As QB Dillon Gabriel and QB Kenny Pickett continue working their way back from hamstring injuries, they were able to participate in 7-on-7 drills during the joint practice. In the first 7-on-7 drill, Pickett took reps first and started by connecting with WR Jerry Jeudy. He then threw another pass to WR Cedric Tillman. QB Shedeur Sanders took reps next and found WR Luke Floriea down the sideline. Gabriel rounded out the reps for the first 7-on-7 period and found Jeudy down the sideline on his first throw. He then connected with WR DeAndre Carter in tight coverage before throwing passes to WR Chase Cota and Floriea.

Simultaneously, the Browns' defense matched up against the Panthers' offense. While they gave up a touchdown early, in another rep, CB Myles Harden recovered a fumble on a dropped pass. S Nik Needham also broke up a pass intended for a Panthers' receiver.

In the second set of 7-on-7 drills, both sides of the ball worked in the red zone. QB Joe Flacco took reps during the second set and found TE Harold Fannin Jr. for a completion. Gabriel connected with WR Jamari Thrash, WR Cade McDonald and Fannin in his reps. Pickett also had his second set of reps, finding TE David Njoku and Tillman. QB Tyler Huntley saw his first reps since signing with the Browns on Aug. 5. He found Cota and TE Mitch Van Vooren for completions.

11-on-11 team periods

The Browns and Panthers split up once again for the team periods. Defensively, the Browns' run defense excelled in limiting any gains by the Panthers. The Browns held multiple runners at the line of scrimmage or allowed just a few gained yards. Harden recorded a pass breakup while CB Tony Brown II intercepted a pass from QB Andy Dalton intended for WR Jimmy Horn Jr. – causing the Browns' defensive players on the sideline to erupt in celebration.

Offensively, Flacco took the first set of reps. On his first rep, he found Jeudy running down the sideline and threw the ball, which Jeudy snagged with one hand for the catch. Sanders took the next set of reps, which included a handoff to RB Trayveon Williams.

In the second 11-on-11 red zone period to close out practice, Flacco threw a checkdown pass to RB Dylan Sampson. He handed the ball off to RB Jerome Ford and found Jeudy for a completion. Sanders took another set of reps and found RB Ahmani Marshall and Carter for completion. Huntley closed out the offensive reps with a quarterback keeper and a pass intended for Marshall, which was broken up by Panthers LB Princely Umanmielen.
