The Browns dropped their first preseason game to the Bears, losing 34-10. The offense scored 10 quick points but struggled to capitalize in the second half.
QB Deshaun Watson played the first half and was effective through the air while rookie WR KC Concepcion led the way for the Browns, making plays all over the field and finding the end zone.
Here are 10 key numbers from Week 1 of the preseason.
1 – CB Michael Coats Jr. tallied the Browns' one interception and turnover of the game, picking off QB Tyson Bagent late in the second quarter. Coats made a great play to jump the pass intended for TE Stephen Carlson and prevent a Bears scoring opportunity.
2- DE Julian Okwara recorded the first of two sacks for the Browns' defense, getting home to Bagent in the final minutes of the second quarter. DE Khordae Sydnor sacked Bagent again on the Bears' final drive of the first half.
3 – The Browns turned over the ball three times in the loss. QB Shedeur Sanders and QB Dillon Gabriel each had interceptions while Watson fumbled on a fourth-down attempt.
3.9 – The Bears managed 3.9 yards per carry against the Browns on Saturday. Chicago rushed the ball 21 times for 89 yards and outside of a 19-yard run from RB Roschon Johnson, the Browns kept the Bears potent rushing attack under control.
5- The Browns' defense tallied five tackles for loss, each by a different player. S Christopher Edmonds, DT Coziah Izzard, Okwara, Sydnor and LB Edefuan Ulofoshio each recorded one.
9 – Cleveland totaled nine passes defensed in the opening preseason game. LB Winston Reid led the team with three, followed by Coats with two. Four players — CB Nate Evans, Tyler Hall, Patrick Jenkins and Jeremiah McClendon — recorded one.
10- In the first half of the game, when most of the offensive starters played, the Browns scored 10 points. The first drive ended with a 50-yard field goal from Andre Szmyt and Concepcion added a touchdown early in the second quarter.
11- Watson finished the game with 11 completions on 15 pass attempts — a 73.3 percent completion percentage. Saturday was Watson's first start in nearly two years, and the veteran quarterback connected with WR Denzel Boston and WR Jerry Jeudy for big gains on the Browns' first drive of the game.
43- RB Dylan Sampson had the longest catch of the game for the Browns. Sampson took a screen pass 43 yards into Cleveland territory to set up the Browns' second-quarter touchdown. The second year running back was also Cleveland's leading receiver with 43 yards in the game.
72- Concepcion had 72 all-purpose yards in his first game as a rookie and made his impact felt in all facets of the matchup. Concepcion started the game with a 31-yard punt return after the Bears' first drive of the game and then carried the ball for 14 yards on his only rush attempt of the game, diving for the pylon to score a touchdown. Through the air, Concepcion added three catches for 27 yards.
