Training Camp observations from the 4th day at The Greenbrier

The Browns practiced in pads for the first time during training camp

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va – The pads were back on for the first time of training camp.

Yet, due to the rainy weather that blanketed the mountains of West Virginia – and being the first day back in pads – the Browns mainly worked in position groups as they adjusted to the soggy conditions.

"I thought the players did a nice job as well adjusting," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "That's the name of the game. We'll continue to do that as necessary, but got our work in and adjusted a few different things just being down there, but made sure that we got our work in."

Here are the top observations from the fourth practice of training camp.

Jerome Ford returns to practice

RB Jerome Ford took to the practice field for the first time of training camp. He participated in a drill with the running backs as they practiced handoffs with the quarterbacks and running their routes. He also caught a pass from QB Deshaun Watson in the next phase of the drill.

Ford missed the first three days of training camp for personal reasons.

"He's got a little bundle of joy is the good news, but I'll let him share the details," Stefanski said.

The running backs also went through an individual drill centered around the strength of their legs and control of the ball, in which they held onto a ball on a band and took slow steps forward and held their stance. They moved on the next command another step.

Deshaun Watson continues to throw

Watson was in pads with the rest of the team and continued to throw during positional drills. As they ran a drill practicing routes with the pass catchers and quarterbacks, Watson connected with WR Elijah Moore and TE David Njoku on a couple of his reps.

Kickoff coverage preparation

As the Browns continue to work through the nuances of the new kickoff rules, the Browns spent time lined up in coverage and simulated the start of the kickoff.

On the opposite end of the field, a group of players practiced working on returns simulating different places the ball could land on a kickoff. Players who participated in those reps included WR Ahmearean Brown, RB D'Onta Foreman, RB Peirre Strong Jr., WR James Proche II, WR Jamari Thrash, WR Jaelon Darden and Ford.

Other notes

  • The cornerbacks worked on a drill lined up across from a teammate, focused on getting hands on a pass catcher and defending in coverage.
  • The defensive line worked through a series of drills simulating getting past blocking bags to reach the quarterback.
  • DE Myles Garrett was not in pads and didn't fully participate in practice.
