The Browns are set for their final preseason game against the Rams at Huntington Bank Field on Aug. 23 after two games away from Cleveland.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski is planning to play the starters in the game for the first time in the preseason. However, the final preseason game is also an opportunity for players trying to make the NFL roster to show why they should be one of the 53 players to make it to Week 1.
With one game and five days before the Browns have to cut their roster down to 53, here are three burning questions that will be answered on Saturday:
How will the starters look in the game?
Stefanski has called the final preseason game and the week leading up to it a dress rehearsal for the first regular season game. With the starters set to play about 20-25 plays, Stefanski is making sure that the players will be used to the routine when the week of the regular season opener comes around.
"There will be some guys that get out of there a little bit sooner than others, but it's really individualized playing for each guy, but you will see the starters out there," Stefanski said.
The Browns have prepped for the Rams throughout the week, getting a game plan at the beginning of the week. In practice, the Browns have had more competitive periods than usual and simulated the Rams offense and defense with carded periods.
For some veterans, including newly minted starting QB Joe Flacco, this will be their first taste of preseason action. Although veterans like Flacco or DE Myles Garrett have not played, they have been given reps against other teams through joint practices.
"I'm definitely ready to play. (If) my number's called, I'm definitely suited up and ready to go," Garrett said on Aug. 20.
What will the quarterback rotation look like?
While Flacco will start on Saturday, the other Browns' quarterbacks are still recovering from preseason injuries. Stefanski ruled out QB Kenny Pickett playing due to a lingering hamstring injury suffered on July 26. Quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are recovering from a hamstring and oblique injury, respectively. While Gabriel has been full go in practice throughout the week, Sanders did not practice on Aug. 19 but continued to make progress.
Stefanski said Gabriel will serve as the backup quarterback, while Sanders will also see playing time following Gabriel. Sanders has already played nearly three quarters of preseason football against the Panthers while Gabriel played the first half against the Eagles.
"Rookie development never ends, and player development never ends. I've told you guys before, we're obsessive about that, especially at the quarterback position, but at all positions," Stefanski said on Aug. 19. "So, those guys will constantly be working and constantly be taking advantage of all the resources in this building. Going back to the original point with Joe (Flacco), they're in every meeting and they need to prepare to start."
Can the Browns defense keep the hot preseason going?
Through two preseason games, the Browns' defense has allowed 16 offensive points and under 170 total yards, including holding the Eagles to 88 total yards. With the Rams coming into town, the defensive averages will be threatened.
The Rams have scored an average of 27 points through two preseason games, recording 300-plus total yards in each game. Rams QB Stetson Bennett IV has led the offense in the preseason, including when he threw for over 300 yards against the Chargers in a tight 23-22 win in Week 2. However, Bennett's also thrown an interception in each game.
Coming into the season, takeaways were a key stat for the Browns' defense, and they have been able to create extra possessions for the offense. In both of their preseason games, the Browns' defense has recorded an interception, both of which led to a touchdown. Staunch defense and stealing points from the opposing offense has been a signature of Cleveland' defense through the preseason. That will need to continue against what has been a dangerous offensive Rams team.
