Storylines to Watch
- How the Browns defend QB Drake Maye — The Browns' rush and coverage will have to work in tandem in defending against QB Drake Maye, who has the deep-threat ability and can scramble. Through seven games, Maye has completed 152 of 202 passing attempts for 1,744 passing yards and 12 touchdowns. He has also totaled 44 carries for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He has 29 scrambles this season and is averaging 6.7 yards per scramble attempt. However, Maye has also been pressured 59 times this season, including 15 quarterback hits and 22 sacks. The Browns have been able to apply pressure to opposing quarterbacks this season, with 18 sacks, 36 quarterback hits and 50 pressures in the first seven weeks of the season. Applying that pressure from the front seven and defending in coverage could allow the Browns to limit Maye in both passing the ball and scrambling.
- How the Browns combat a stout Patriots' run defense — The Browns will face the third-best run defense in the league when they face the Patriots, a stout defense that limits explosive plays and is only allowing an average of 77.1 rushing yards per game. Opposing offenses are averaging 3.44 yards per rush, which is the third-lowest in the NFL this season. The Browns have relied on the use of their run game and RB Quinshon Judkins to anchor their offense. Judkins is averaging 4.3 yards per carry this season, and leads the Browns with a total of 109 carries for 467 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Judkins also has four plays of 20 or more yards this season. In order for the Browns to continue their use of the run game, the offensive line must block and help create rushing lanes, while Judkins, Dylan Sampson and Jerome Ford stay true to their reads.
- How the Browns limit Patriots' pass catchers — Maye's top three targets in the pass game are WR Stefon Diggs —who has 39 receptions for 456 receiving yards — WR Kayshon Boutte, who has totaled 20 catches for 356 receiving yards and four touchdowns, and TE Hunter Henry with 24 receptions for 310 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The Patriots are eighth in the league averaging 239.9 passing yards per game. However, the Browns allow the third-fewest net passing yards per game at 173.7. This season, the Browns have also picked off five passes — including three interceptions in Week 7 — reading the offense and making a play on the receiver. The Browns' secondary, which has recorded all five interceptions, will play a key role in defending the Patriots' top pass catchers as they look to limit their ability to come down with the pass.
