8.11 TC Practice Observations

For the first time in a week, the Browns practiced at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, returning from Charlotte after their preseason game against the Panthers on Aug. 8.

"Good to be back out here. Haven't been back in a week," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "We'll get a good practice out here today, then we'll head out on the road again to (Philadelphia)."

The Browns ran a heavy mix of team drills, ranging from 7-on-7 to 11-on-11 in different areas of the field, including on the goal line, in the red zone and from 30 yards out.

Here are the top observations from Monday's practice of training camp:

Injury updates

QB Dillon Gabriel participated in some 11-on-11 drills as he continues to return from his hamstring injury. QB Kenny Pickett was still held out of team drills but participated in some 7-on-7 drills as he works to return from a hamstring injury.

LB Mohamoud Diabate was held out of practice. G Zak Zinter and RB Pierre Strong Jr. made their return to practice. Strong participated in a limited capacity.

Touchdowns all around

Cleveland ran a team goal line period to begin practice and the offense found the end zone on the two plays QB Joe Flacco led the offense.

The first came on a hook and ladder from WR Jamari Thrash to RB Dylan Sampson The next play, TE Harold Fannin Jr. ran an end around, getting the handoff from Flacco and taking the ball down for a touchdown.

With Gabriel and QB Shedeur Sanders running the offense, Sampson and RB Ahmani Marshall scored rushing touchdowns in goal-line sets.

Once the Browns transitioned to 7-on-7 in the red zone, the highlights started coming. Pickett had three consecutive passing touchdowns in the drill. The first came from TE David Njoku mossing his man and catching the ball on top of the defender's helmet. Then, WR Jerry Jeudy toe-tapped in the back of the end zone. Pickett ended his reps in the drill with a pass through coverage in the middle of the end zone to WR Kaden Davis.

Gabriel and TE Brenden Bates connected on the goal line with a one-handed grab from the tight end. During 11-on-11 at the defense's 30-yard line, Gabriel threw to WR Gage Larvadain for a short touchdown catch, ending the day with two passing touchdowns. In 7-on-7, Sanders lofted a ball into the back right corner of the end zone that found the hands of Larvadain.

During the same 11-on-11 drill that Gabriel and Larvadain connected, Flacco fired a pass to Jeudy in the front corner of the end zone for his second passing touchdown of the practice.

65 yards, 55 seconds

The Browns ran a drill during practice in which the offense had 55 seconds and one timeout to get 65 yards down the field to score a touchdown or get a field goal to win the game. Flacco and Sanders were the only two quarterbacks to participate in the drill.

Flacco went first, completing two of his first three passes, both completions going to Thrash. His third completion was a short pass inbounds to Njoku that kept the clock running, forcing the field goal unit to get on the field in a hurry. The time ran out before the field goal unit was able to get the kick off.

Sanders' rep in the drill started with a 7-yard gain. After an incomplete pass, he connected with Larvadain for a first down. On the ensuing first down, he had his second consecutive completion to a rookie, this time being Fannin for a 9-yard gain.

After two consecutive incompletions, on third down, Sanders found WR Cade McDonald for the first down. With time ticking, Sanders got the offense lined up and spiked the ball with one second left at the 35-yard line.

K Andre Szmyt missed the 52-yard kick that would've been good if not for the goal posts being closer together to help with kicking with precision.
