Storylines to Watch
- How the Browns limit running back duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs — The Browns' run defense will face another tough matchup with the duo of RB David Montgomery and RB Jahmyr Gibbs. Through the first three games of the season, Montgomery has rushed for 233 yards on 34 carries and three touchdowns, averaging 77.7 yards per game and 6.9 rushing yards per carry. Gibbs has rushed for 180 yards on 43 carries and three touchdowns, averaging 60 yards per game and 4.2 rushing yards per carry. However, the Browns have been able to shut down elite running backs through the first three games, limiting Derrick Henry and Josh Jacobs. The Browns' run defense has only allowed a total of 172 rushing yards through three games for an average of 57.3 rushing yards per game, the best in the league.
- How the Browns utilize the run and pass game to score points— Offensively, the Browns will face a defense that features challenges at all three levels with players like DE Aidan Hutchinson, LB Jack Campbell, LB Derrick Barnes and S Brian Branch. Through three games, the Lions' run defense ranks 11th in the league and has allowed 99 rushing yards per game, while their pass defense has allowed 208.7 passing yards per game, ranked 15th in the league. The Browns have struggled to move the ball through the air, as they rank 16th in the league averaging 203.7 passing yards per game. They sit at 29th in the league in rushing yards per game, averaging 86.7, but the run game has seen a spark in the past two games with the addition of RB Quinshon Judkins. Against a Lions' offense that is averaging 34.3 points per game this season, ranked second in the league, the Browns' offense must utilize the run and the pass to find the end zone and put points on the board.
- How the Browns stop the Lions from converting on fourth down — Through the first three weeks of the season, the Lions have converted 7 of 8 fourth down attempts. They are a team that will try for the first down, and the Browns must treat those fourth downs similar to how they would treat a third down. If they get the third down stop, they must be prepared to make another stop on fourth down. The Browns will need to not only apply pressure to QB Jared Goff, but also cover their pass catchers and stop the run on fourth down attempts to turn the ball over on downs and give the ball back to their offense.
