Of the Browns' safeties who had three or more years in the NFL from the 2024 team, just one remains on the roster going into the 2025 season – S Grant Delpit.

With the changes to their safety room, the fifth-year safety is already taking on an increased leadership role to help his new teammates get acclimated to the defense. Delpit said his former teammate S Rodney McLeod Jr. helped him learn how to be the leader he is aiming to be.

"(McLeod Jr.) definitely helped me kind of mature as a player the last two years he was here," Delpit said. "So, he kind of prepared me for this role that I'm in now. I was always ready to lead the room and really take it on my shoulders. So, I'm excited to be that guy on the defense and take everybody with me."

While the Browns signed three NFL veterans, all with six or more years of NFL experience, to the safety room, Delpit wants to make sure they're able to find their groove with Cleveland. A way he hopes to do that is by using the versatility he developed after being utilized in the box last season.

"Yeah, I do it all, man. MLB anything, anywhere on the football field," Delpit said. "I think that it is cool to be able to fit in and be comfortable. I think that gives guys confidence as well if they see me doing everything, they know that they could do it also."

While Delpit had the second 100-plus tackle season of his career in 2024 due to his versatility, one area the Browns struggled with was getting takeaways.

The lack of turnovers forced from the Browns last season was a big talking point, and Delpit noted the need to improve in that area this season. He remembers the interception that he dropped in the end zone, and he remembers the ones that the defense fell just short of getting a hold of.

"I think we only had four interceptions last year and Denzel (Ward) had (two) of them, so we have to get a couple more takeaway," Delpit said.

Ultimately for him, it's about coming down with the contested catches and beating the opposing wide receivers on those plays. Those contested plays are big for momentum, according to Delpit, since it gives the offense a chance to score. An interception for the defense, with a touchdown from the offense, can become a 14-point play and flip the script of a game.

During training camp on July 24, Delpit had an interception, signaling that he's taken to mind the difficulties the team had with having such moments last season. His teammate's reaction to the interception also showed the chemistry that Delpit within the secondary, as CB Greg Newsome II and S Ronnie Hickman came to celebrate with him following the play.

A part of what Delpit has been doing to get him in the mindset of picking passes off has been watching highlights of fellow LSU alum, Tyrann Mathieu. Across 12 NFL seasons, Mathieu had 36 interceptions, recording multiple interceptions in 10 of those seasons. Delpit has had one such season in 2022, recording four, and is trying to be part of the solution to the secondary.

"The ball always seemed to find (Tyrann Mathieu)," Delpit said. "Just going back to his college days, 2014 Arizona days. I've been watching a lot of his tape, so trying to be one of those guys (to get takeaways)."

As he enters his fifth year with the Browns, Delpit is stepping up further into a leadership position and trying to find ways defensively to help the Browns win.

"As you get older, I think it happens naturally," Delpit said. "Obviously, I'm hard on myself. I haven't been doing enough to help this team win, in my opinion. So, whatever I can do to improve that, prove myself, that's what I'm going to do."
