8.4 Training Camp Observations

The Browns had one last training camp practice in front of their home crowd before heading to North Carolina for a joint practice against the Panthers on Aug. 6.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski talked about the importance of the fans at the training camp practices and how they help keep the intensity up.

"We're going to miss our fans, but they've been terrific all camp. Our guys get a tremendous amount of juice from our fans," Stefanski said before practice. "These young kids that are out here, it's been a really special few days out here, so I want to acknowledge our fans first and foremost."

Cleveland continued the emphasis on team drills, running 11-on-11 drills as well as working on all phases of special teams – field goals, kickoffs, punting and returns.

Here are the top observations from Day 10 of training camp:

Injury updates

QB Kenny Pickett was held out of team drills as he continues to rehab from a hamstring injury he suffered earlier in training camp. QB Dillon Gabriel was also limited in practice due to tightness in his hamstring. After dealing with arm soreness on Day 9, QB Shedeur Sanders fully participated in practice. According to Stefanski, Sanders is still sore but is getting treatment to remedy the situation.

DE Myles Garrett returned to practice after being held out of Day 9 of training camp as a precaution. CB Greg Newsome II didn't practice in full on Day 10, recovering from a shoulder injury that also held him out on Day 9.

Joe Thomas returns to Cleveland

Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Browns T Joe Thomas helped coach the Browns' offensive line during Day 10. Following practice, Thomas talked and worked with T Jack Conklin. Conklin, a 10-year veteran, is just a year shy of Thomas' 11-year stay in the league.

"Anytime Joe's around and we can mine him for everything that he's worth, we're going to do that," Stefanski said. "He's back in the o-line meeting rooms, getting his football fix, and we're happy to have him."

Rep distribution

QB Joe Flacco and Sanders got the brunt of the work on Day 10 since both quarterbacks participated fully in practice. In 7-on-7, Flacco lofted a pass across the middle to WR Diontae Johnson to start off the drill. On his next throw, he found WR Jerry Jeudy downfield.

The pair would connect again during 11-on-11 when Flacco threaded a pass to Jeudy on the sideline for a completion. Flacco's last throw of the drill was a checkdown to RB Jerome Ford.

Sanders nearly had the play of the day with a long throw downfield to WR Cade McDonald, but the pass went off the tips of McDonald's fingers, falling incomplete. He had a quick completion to TE Sal Cannella and another to WR DeAndre Carter during 7-on-7.

During the first set of 11-on-11, Sanders went three-for-three on his throws, completing a pass each to WR Chase Cota, RB Ahmani Marshall and RB Toa Taua.

Gabriel and Pickett were limited and participated in 7-on-7s. Gabriel had one set of three plays in the first 11-on-11 drill but was held out of the second 11-on-11 drill that finished practice.

Gabriel had a completion to Johnson and Carter, as well as finding WR Kaden Davis on a short play that nearly earned a first down. Pickett also had a completion to Davis but during 7-on-7.

Defensive stops

During the final 11-on-11 drill, while the offense's objective was to get down the field and score a touchdown, the defense held them to a field goal during both drives.

On the first drive, after allowing a catch for a medium gain, the defense forced incompletions on second and third down, pressuring the quarterback to throw it away both times.

During the second drive, the defense recorded a "sack" before giving up a first down on the next play. After that, the defense rebounded with another "sack" and another throwaway to get to fourth down.

The defense's successes allowed K Dustin Hopkins and K Andre Szmyt to work on varying lengths of field goals, both nailing a field goal during the drill.
