Monday was the first day pads were on for Browns' training camp, which is LB Quincy Williams' favorite day of the year.  Williams laid out his pads before practice, excited to break them in for the first time.

"Get to spruce up my helmet a little bit, break in my shoulder pads, might run into the wall a little bit (to) make sure I'm good," Williams said before practice.

During certain 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods, the Browns worked on situational drills such as from just inside and outside the red zone. With the pads on, TE Harold Fannin Jr. and DT Mason Graham posted impressive days on Day 5 of Browns' training camp.

Quarterback competition's first day with pads

QB Deshaun Watson took first team reps on Monday while QB Shedeur Sanders worked with the second team.

Watson connected with WR Jerry Jeudy on a short route over the middle of the field towards the beginning of practice. On play action, Watson found TE Jack Stoll for a nice gain.

During a two-spot 11-on-11 period, Sanders connected with WR KC Concepcion for a long touchdown pass.

Sanders' best sequence came at the end of practice, where he led a two-minute drill that ended with a touchdown. On the first play, WR Denzel Boston drew a pass interference on a deep throw from Sanders. Then Sanders followed it up by connecting with WR Tylan Wallace. To close out practice, Sanders placed the ball over the shoulder of WR Gage Larvadain in the end zone, prompting a team celebration.

Harold Fannin Jr. posts big day

Fannin worked on catching the football in traffic during individual work on Monday, which showed during team drills. Fannin brought in four catches during practice, with multiple coming across the middle of the field and in traffic.

Fannin caught his first pass over the middle of the field from Watson on the opening play of 11-on-11. QB Dillon Gabriel rolled to his right and connected with Fannin for his second catch of the day and another big gain. On his third catch of practice, Fannin snatched the ball away from S Daniel Thomas. In the red zone, Fannin overpowered S Ronnie Hickman in 11-on-11 on a short pass. The ball was slightly behind him, but Fannin adjusted to make the catch.

Fannin also showed off his blocking during 11-on-11, lining up as a fullback on one play and maintaining his block to keep the pocket clean.

Mason Graham continues to impress in camp

Graham had another good showing on Day 5 of training camp, making a couple big plays while drawing praise from head coach Todd Monken for his anticipation at the line of scrimmage.

"Well, I mean, talk about ball get off — what I didn't know is I always saw him as maybe an undersized inside guy with great ball get off, that's disruptive," Monken said before practice. "What he is, is that, but in terms of the D-line, in terms of calls and anticipation of what he's going to see, communication, quarterback, verbal, O-line, in terms of the calls, I see it every day. He's not only that, but he's more, because he really understands football and he anticipates what offenses are trying to do to him. And that I didn't know — Jesse Minter told me that, the head of Michigan told me that at the owners meetings. He said he's much more than just a guy that gets off the ball. He's fun to watch. It's hard as an offensive head coach — every now and then you can be a little bit whiny when they're disruptive, but it's awesome for us."

The pads being on allowed for a better look the run defense, which Graham excelled at on Monday. On one play, Graham evaded a double team and lunged at the legs of RB Quinshon Judkins for what could have been a tackle to prevent a big gain.

Graham continues to draw double teams and extensive attention during training camp. His bull rush stands out, as he overpowered offensive lineman multiple times on Day 5.

In pass rush, Graham broke up a play when Watson stepped up in the pocket, with DE Jared Verse collapsing on the edge. It was a sneak peek to how Graham and Verse could play off each other this season.

Other Notes from Day 5

  • Rookie S Emmanuel McNeil-Warren made a great anticipatory jump on the football in 7-on-7, leading to a pass break up.
  • Boston made a good catch against CB Tyson Campbell in 7-on-7 and drew a key pass interference in the final 11-on-11 two-minute drill of practice.
  • G KT Leveston took first team reps at right guard while G Teven Jenkins did not practice.
  • T Dawand Jones and T Spencer Fano continue to rotate at left tackle, with Jones taking first team reps on Monday.
