The pads were back on for a second consecutive day, making it the fourth padded practice the Browns have had in training camp.

The agenda for Day 9 included setting the tone at the start of the day. Practice started with 1-on-1 drills before working into team drills, including special teams and an 11-on-11 period that started from inside the offense's 10-yard line.

"Should be a good group of guys pushing each other today," head coach Kevin Stefanski said before practice. "Then, we have a day off tomorrow and then start talking about Carolina next week."

Here are the top observations from Day 9 of training camp:

Injury report

DE Myles Garrett and CB Greg Newsome II were held out of practice on Day 9. Stefanski said that Garrett was held out of practice as a precaution, while Newsome has a shoulder injury and is considered "day-to-day."

Quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Kenny Pickett were both held out of team drills after participating in 1-on-1s. Sanders was held out due to arm soreness, while Pickett is still on the mend from his hamstring injury.

Starting physical

Right after the Browns stretched, they circled up on the far end of the practice field at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus. Stefanski set the tone of the practice, instituting a 1-on-1 blocking drill between the running backs and linebackers as the first drill of the day. The entire team watched and cheered as the two positions butted heads, getting the energy level up.

Right after that, wide receivers and defensive backs went at each other for 1-on-1s. CB Denzel Ward broke up the first play while WR Luke Floriea drew a pass interference call on the second and final play of the drill.

Gage-ing the offense

WR Gage Larvadain stood out on the offensive side of the ball on Day 9, finding a way to get open for QB Joe Flacco and into the end zone. His first reception of the day came on a deep ball from Flacco, tracking the ball down and getting near the 10-yard line. In the same drill set, he caught the ball at the 15-yard line and then stiff-armed a defender to get a few extra yards on the play.

Yet, the offense's best play of the day was a bucket drop touchdown from Flacco to Larvadain placed at the back right pylon. Larvadain managed to get two feet in, and his momentum carried him all the way past the grass patch behind the end zone onto the pavement. The play after, Flacco and Larvadain connected again for a short drive. All in all, Larvadain had five receptions on the day and a touchdown.

TE Harold Fannin Jr. also had a touchdown on Day 9, scoring on a short pass from QB Dillon Gabriel in an 11-on-11 drill in the red zone.

Defensive stronghold

The defense also had a strong day on Day 9, doing everything to make it as hard as possible for the offense to drive down the field during team drills.

Twice during 11-on-11 drills, they forced and recovered fumbles. The first came from a play that would've likely been dead in a real game, but both sides kept going, allowing the ball to be stripped out and LB Nathaniel Watson to pick the ball up. The second fumble came right after a catch, getting punched out and FS Damontae Kazee scooping the ball up.

The run game had a difficult time getting established with the pressure coming from the front four, with plays often getting stopped at the first level. However, some runs were able to break through, including a run to the outside from RB Jerome Ford. During 11-on-11, Ford was able to get down the left sideline, nearly scoring if not for LB Mohamoud Diabate tracking him down before he could get into the end zone.
