Time is quickly ticking down until the Browns hit the football field for their first game of the preseason. Eight days of training camp have gone by, and Cleveland is now a week away from its first preseason game against the Panthers on Aug. 8.

Day 8 saw consistent competition, with blocking drills for the pass catchers, three different situational drills and 1-on-1s across the board.

"I think the guys are doing a nice job understanding all the work that needs to be done," head coach Kevin Stefanski said before practice. "They're focused, meetings have been excellent, so looking forward to another good day."

Here are the top observations from Day 8 of training camp:

Pickett back at practice

QB Kenny Pickett returned to practice for the first time since July 26. The fourth-year quarterback was limited, not participating in team drills. Pickett went through positional drills and threw during 1-on-1s but was shut down for the rest of practice.

Whether or not Pickett will participate in the joint practice against Carolina is still to be determined. Stefanski cited that he wanted to see how Pickett looked in his return to the field before moving forward.

Blocking your man

The Browns' wideouts on Day 8 got ready for all aspects of what they will do this season. Players like WR Jerry Jeudy and WR Cedric Tillman went up against CB Denzel Ward and CB Greg Newsome II, not just trying to catch the ball, but also trying to block them.

Twice during practice, the wide receivers were asked to practice their blocking. One drill had the defensive back trying to shed one receiver blocking him and get to the other receiver before the wideout could take off. The second time the drill occurred, it was a true 1-on-1 with the receivers and tight ends trying to hold the defensive backs and linebackers away from the tackling dummy.

CB Cameron Mitchell blew through his man at the beginning of the drill. He dove to tackle the dummy, putting a big hit on the inanimate football player.

Maximum competition

Among the first drills the Browns did after getting out of positional drills were 1-on-1s across the entire team.

The wide receivers went up against the defensive backs, aiming to catch the ball. The tight ends went up against the linebackers, trying to stop them from getting to the quarterback. The offensive line went against their defensive counterparts, aiming to block as well.

Mitchell added a pick to his impressive day, taking advantage of an overthrow to WR Winston Wright.

CB LaMareon James outdid Mitchell, though, intercepting two passes during team drills. His first pick was thanks to a tip into the air by S Nik Needham that allowed James to secure the ball. His second was also caused by a deflection, this time by a receiver.

Catch, pass and run into the end zone

There were several touchdowns scored on Day 8, both through the air and on the ground.

During 7-on-7, QB Joe Flacco threw two touchdowns to two tight ends. His first went to TE Harold Fannin Jr. on a pass to the left. Flacco's second touchdown went through traffic into the back of the end zone to TE Blake Whiteheart. Flacco added a third touchdown on the afternoon during 11-on-11s with a pass to WR Jamari Thrash in the end zone.

QB Shedeur Sanders had the other passing touchdown among the quarterbacks. During 7-on-7 work, Sanders found RB Ahmani Marshall on a crossing route just below the goal line, making it easy for the rookie to score.

During 11-on-11, the running backs kept their feet moving to score touchdowns, feeding off running backs coach Duce Staley's constant energy. RB Jerome Ford broke off tackles at the line of scrimmage, making it through multiple levels to get the touchdown. RB Pierre Strong Jr. pushed the defender into the end zone along with him, while Marshall did the same thing a few plays later.
