The Browns experienced a valuable lesson in how to play with a lead in the fourth quarter and close out games in their 23-16 loss to the Ravens.
After taking a lead during the second quarter, the Browns fought through the remainder of the game to stay on top. However, the Ravens tied the game at 16 apiece on a field goal with 4:59 left in the fourth quarter. Then, following a Browns three-and-out, the Ravens scored what would be the game-winning touchdown on a 35-yard run by TE Mark Andrews on a direct snap. The Browns had one final offensive drive to even the score but stalled and turned the ball over on downs.
"The guys were fighting until the end, but we've got to find a way to close that one out," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "It's disappointing and frustrating with where we were there at the end of the game, but I appreciate how this group is fighting. I appreciate how they are fighting through some tough – the injuries at tackle and those types of things. But man, some good stuff on that football field, but we have to close those games out and have a win with those performances. But we'll get back to work like we always do."
With the loss, the Browns drop to 2-8 on the season. Here are three takeaways from the Browns' 23-16 loss to the Ravens.
Shedeur Sanders makes season debut in second half
After starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel was evaluated for a concussion during halftime, fellow rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders made his NFL debut as he took the field for the Browns' first offensive drive of the game. Sanders has served as the backup quarterback since Week 6.
"Playing a backup quarterback role, that's tough to come in there," Stefanski said. "But we trust him. I know there are things that he's going to want to better. But that's why we work."
Since stepping into the backup quarterback role, Sanders spent time after practice in the "hungry dog" period take reps, as well as extra time in meetings to prepare for his role each Sunday. He said those periods have helped him understand the concepts when he was out on the field taking live reps.
Sanders said he learned he would step in at quarterback as the second half of the game began. He played the entirety of the second half after Gabriel was ruled out for the remainder of the game and is in concussion protocol. On his first offensive drive, Sanders found WR Cedric Tillman on a 5-yard pass for his first completion and then TE David Njoku for a 7-yard gain on his first offensive drive. Sanders later showed off his strength in a 25-yard completion to TE Harold Fannin Jr. However, as Sanders and the Browns fought to move down the field, they were not able to score in the second half of the game.
Sanders completed 4 of 16 passing attempts for 47 yards and one interception in six offensive drives. He also took two sacks for a loss of 27 yards in the second half. Sanders acknowledged after the game that he felt like he did not play his best football in the second half.
"I don't think I played good at all. I think it's a lot of things we need to look at during the week and go and just get comfortable," Sanders said. "Even throwing routes with Jerry (Jeudy) and throwing routes with all those guys. So, I think that was my first ball to him all year. But other than that, I just think overall we just got to go next week and understand so then we have a week to prepare stuff I like to do."
The Browns will follow the steps of the concussion protocol for Gabriel, and if necessary, can start Sanders if Gabriel does not clear protocol ahead of Week 12.
However, Sanders reflected on his chance to take the field against the Ravens and to play alongside the first team to gain valuable reps.
"Just going out there, seeing daylight, that's all I needed to see how they move out there," Sanders said. "Playing against a great defense, you got guys from the Pro Bowl out there, so it's exciting to see this is what it's like. I'm excited for it. So, I just got to take this one and build on it."

Browns force key turnovers
The Browns had three takeaways over the course of the game against the Ravens, one on special teams and two on defense.
After Week 10 in which special teams gave up two touchdowns on kickoff and punt returns, they answered the call in Week 11. Early in the second quarter, Ravens punt returner LaJohntay Wester muffed a punt, which S Grant Delpit recovered on the 6-yard line. The recovery set the Browns' offense up to add a field goal and give the Browns a 6-3 lead.
"It was a great play for us," Delpit said. "(P Corey) Bojorquez hit a great ball. The returner ha trouble. We're just going what we can to get the offense the ball."
Then later in the second quarter, LB Devin Bush intercepted a tipped pass and returned the ball 23 yards for the touchdown to give the Browns as 13-3 lead. The interception was Bush's first interceptions of the season. The touchdown was also the second of his career – the first which occurred in 2019 when he returned a fumble for a score – and the Browns second pick-six of the season.
Then, early in the third quarter after Sanders threw an interception, LB Carson Schwesinger stopped the Ravens from capitalizing on the turnover. On the first play of the Ravens' offensive drive, Schwesinger picked off QB Lamar Jackson for his second interception of the season.
"First and foremost, those guys are playing at an outstanding level right now," DE Myles Garrett said. "Carson especially as a rookie. He is the guy for defensive rookie of the year. I don't think there is anyone ahead of him currently. D-Bush is having an absolute resurgence and feeling more comfortable in the scheme and playing with his hair on fire. So, those guys are taking the ball away. That alluded D-Bush at the beginning of the season, and now he's really starting to put it all together. They are really playing off each other. I couldn't be prouder of how they are playing, and the secondary in general. I think the defense looks good. There will always be plays that we can be a little sharper and execute better. That was a solid performance, but we understand just got to be even higher."
Browns' defense limits Ravens' success in the red zone
Not only did the Browns' defense force two takeaways, but they also kept the Ravens from capitalizing in the red zone for a majority of the game. Baltimore only found the end zone once while being in the red zone.
In the second quarter following a 45-yard completion to WR Zay Flowers, the Ravens were deep in the red zone. A tackle for loss on RB Derrick Henry by Garrett pushed Baltimore back, but two plays later, Henry ran the ball in for a 1-yard touchdown run. However, the Ravens were forced to settle for three field goals over the course of the game after driving down the field and being in scoring position.
The Ravens were also forced to punt on four other offensive possessions over the course of the game and struggled to convert on third downs. They converted just five of 13 third down attempts, keeping Baltimore from extending drives.
The Browns applied pressure to Jackson, with Garrett leading the defense with four sacks. Garrett's first sack of the game came on a third-and-goal for the Ravens, forcing them to settle for a field goal in the first quarter. DT Mike Hall Jr. added a sack, dropping Jackson for a loss of nine yards. The Browns also added seven quarterback hits – five from Garrett and two from Hall – to their pressure on Jackson.
"I thought there was some outstanding moments out there from our defense," Stefanski said. "Obviously, Myles got to the quarterback a bunch of times. I thought he and the defensive line provided pressure throughout the game. Obviously, there's plays that we want back, but I thought to stand up and hold them to field goals in the red zone was a big deal in that football game."
