The Browns took practice to the next level on Monday, putting on pads for the first time in training camp.

"You still need to practice safely," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "So, we'll thud the runners, meaning we'll fit up the runners. We won't tackle to the ground in this practice. But it is important that when you get the pads on – offense, defense, special teams – you have to get acclimated to your pads. Quarterbacks throwing in shoulder pads, people catching in shoulder pads, etc. But by the same token, while, yes, it's physical, we don't want a bunch of guys on the ground. That's not the intention of putting the pads on. It is still to use our technique and still to be smart when it's Browns versus Browns."

Here are the main observations from Day 5 of training camp.

Team Periods

The Browns ran a few team periods during Monday's practice, but with one less quarterback in the rotation. QB Kenny Pickett did not practice as he sustained an injury on Saturday. Stefanski said Pickett received an MRI on the injury and is considered day-to-day.

"It happened at the end of practice there a couple days ago," Stefanski said. "Felt something. So, we'll just treat it. You know, for any player, you're disappointed when you can't be out there with any injury. But he'll be fine. He'll rehab. He'll get back out very quickly."

Stefanski said that while they are distributing the extra reps around for all three quarterbacks, QB Joe Flacco will take a majority of the first team reps.

Flacco took reps first in the first 11-on-11 period and had handoffs to RB Dylan Sampson and RB Pierre Strong Jr. Flacco also connected with WR Cedric Tillman, who was tightly covered, for the completion. Then QB Shedeur Sanders took his turn, connecting with WR Luke Floriea and RB Toa Taua, as well as finding WR Gage Larvadain in the end zone. QB Dillon Gabriel closed out the first 11-on-11 period with a handoff to Strong and connected with WR Jerry Jeudy in the middle of the field. He also found Larvadain for a completion.

In the second set of 11-on-11 work, Flacco connected with WR Kaden Davis, handed the ball off to RB Ahmani Marshall and held onto the ball himself to take off downfield. Gabriel took reps next and handed the ball off to Marshall. He also connected with WR Jamari Thrash and WR Diontae Johnson on the sideline.

In the final team period, Flacco handed the ball off to Strong who took off downfield. He then intended a pass for Davis, but Davis was covered by CB Denzel Ward. Flacco then handed the ball off to Sampson, but Sampson was locked up by the defense. Gabriel connected again with Johnson downfield or a long pass, while Sanders closed out the final 11-on-11 period with a touchdown pass to TE Sal Cannella.

One-on-one drills

The Browns continued their use of one-on-drills in practice, with the secondary pairing up against the pass catchers. Tillman caught a pass from Flacco in his matchup, while Ward provided tight coverage on Jeudy in another matchup. The competitive one-one-period with pads on allowed the secondary and the pass catchers to battle it out to come up with the ball.

Specialists Work

While the offense and defense ran 11-on-11 drills, on a separate field at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, K Dustin Hopkins, P Corey Bojorquez and LS Rex Sunahara took reps of their own. The unit practiced field goal attempts, working on the connectivity as a unit and Hopkins' accuracy in the kicking game.
