With the sun beating down on the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, the Browns had their first day of training camp on Wednesday.

The Browns broke off into their position groups to start practice. After, they worked with their side of the ball and ran modified 7-on-7 drills, finishing day one with 11-on-11.

"Good to see everybody, excited to be back. It's day one for the veterans. The rookies, my other coaches, we've been in here for a bit, but getting some really good work done," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "So, as you know, exciting days for our guys, when you're back in the building for the first time and getting around the players. I think the guys have the right attitude, understanding the work that has to get done."

Here are observations from the opening day of training camp:

Rotating the QBs

In 11-on-11s, QB Kenny Pickett took reps first in the drill while QB Dillon Gabriel and QB Shedeur Sanders went second and third, respectively. QB Joe Flacco switched off with Pickett during the modified 7-on-7 drill, meaning all four quarterbacks got reps.

Pickett on the third play of 11-on-11 started finding his groove, scrambling out to the right for a few yards and following it up with a tight pass to WR DeAndre Carter and then connecting with WR Jerry Jeudy on the next play.

Gabriel showcased his dual-threat ability, scrambling on his first play and then closing out his reps during 11-on-11 with a long pass to WR Gage Larvadain. Sanders followed up Gabriel's pass with a bullet to WR Cade McDonald on the left side of the field as well as finding Larvadain through a tight window.

Stefanski said to not to buy in too much to the order that the quarterbacks, as well as other positions, are getting snaps at this stage of training camp.

"Yeah, I think with all things depth charts, certainly, quarterback," Stefanski said. "I have a plan that's in pencil, and we have to take in information every single day, take in how guys are handling certain situations, and then adjust from there. But we'll get to those types of decisions later on."

Players not Practicing on Day 1

Along with QB Deshaun Watson, DT Mike Hall Jr. and WR David Bell not participating in the start of training camp after being placed on active/PUP and active/NFI, respectively, TE David Njoku, RB Jerome Ford and LB Jordan Hicks did not practice on the first day of practice.

"I mean, obviously the focus for Mike right now is getting healthy, and he's working very hard both in the training room and in the weight room," Stefanski said. "He's doing a really nice job."

Rookie Showcase

Two rookies made their presence known on the first day of practice.

Fifth overall pick DT Mason Graham helped plug up the middle during the 11-on-11 period, creating pressure that led to a 'sack' on the first play of the drill and slowing down the run game, qualities why CB Denzel Ward is looking for Graham to stand out.

"I'm looking for Mason Graham. I'm looking for him to get in that backfield," Ward said. "I'm not trying to cover for too long out there, so he can go help my guy Myles out on the d-line, but definitely Mason. I'm looking forward to all those guys, all our new guys we got."

Then RB Dylan Sampson in his reps during 11-on-11 broke through the middle of the field, getting between the blockers for a nice gain.
